Prototype MDF speaker cabinet
MYTH:
Speakers made of real wood are better.
REALITY:
Only if you plan to burn them.
Almost all high-quality loudspeaker cabinets are made from medium density fiber board (a.k.a. MDF) covered with vinyl or real wood veneer or even a painted finish. Real wood, although more expensive, tends to vibrate, creating its own unwelcome and annoying sounds. It’s therefore not well-suited for use as the primary speaker cabinet material. What is important about speaker construction is that the box should be solid and acoustically inert. So just save any of those speaker cabinets made entirely of real wood for your next camping trip. Mmmm…I do enjoy the smores.
